The Cut makes the Diamond...
by Julie Lee of Julie's Jewelry Design, LLC.
Do you remember the first diamond you ever saw? I vividly remember my
mother's wedding ring. It sparkled and shimmered with rainbow colors.
The fire of my mother's diamond was what attracted me much in the same way the
diamonds that you see attract you to fine diamond jewelry. Diamonds have a
mysterious beauty, which is wondrously revealed by the human touch of the
diamond cutter.
Cut, the often misunderstood and forgotten C, is what makes a
diamond truly memorable. Cut
refers to both the shape of the diamond as well as its make. Diamonds are
cut in a variety of shapes or outlines such as the modern round brilliant cut,
the marquise cut and pear shape to name a few.
Make refers to a stones symmetry, finish and proportions. These factors
influence the optical characteristics of a gem - its brilliance,
dispersion and scintillation.
Symmetry is a grading term for the exactness of shape and placement of
facets. Variations in symmetry include off-center culets and tables, poor
facet alignment, misshapen facets, out-of-round girdles, and wavy girdles.
Finish refers to the quality of a diamond's polish, the condition of its
girdle and the precision of the cut.
Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished
diamond. More than any other feature, proportion determines a diamond's
optical properties.
